This year (2013) at DHS we will be trialling a new format of running our 3 annual school sporting carnivals (swimming, cross country and athletics). All sports carnivals will now be run during normal sport time on Thursday afternoons and will no longer be whole day carnivals. This is due to the falling attendance and participation at these events as last year many swimming races had no entrants and most of the events were non-competitive!! Many students also saw the whole day carnivals as a good excuse to have another day off school. Attendance will now be much higher if it is an otherwise normal Thursday and all students will encouraged to compete but of course this is not compulsory at the swimming carnival (31/1/'13). Any serious Yr 7 or Yr12 swimmers are also invited to compete at the swimming carnival even though they would normally have Peer Support in this sport time. All competitors must be available to represent DHS at the Port Stephens Zone carnivals if they are selected. This is a trial format and if it is not successful then whole day carnivals will return next year.
